Issues related to human security and human communities since the creation of humankind has been raised as a necessity for survival over time and this has added to their importance, so that it they are now as one of the main indicators in development. The sense of social security is related to many other socio-economic indicators and considered as a prerequisite for every political, cultural and socio-economic development endeavor. Study of the sense of security in every society can provide valuable insights into the challenges and strategies of socio-economic development. This paper seeks to identify the level of social security and the social factors affecting it in the city of Yazd, Iran. Data were collected through a survey interview in 2011, with a sample of 246 respondents selected through proportionate cluster sampling technique. A scale was designed to measure the degree of sense of social security at 12 different dimensions for both men and women. These dimensions includes the sense of physical security, financial security, economic security, job security, moral security, cultural security, emotional security, affectional security, belief-related security, judicial security, legal security, and honor-based security. Findings of the study indicate that gender, marital status, age, socio-economic status and lifestyle do not have meaningful relationship with the amount of social security that people feel; while the variable rates of mass media, life satisfaction, religiosity, mental-social health and social capital have a significant positive relationship with the degree of social security that people are feeling. The results of multiple regression of three variables (significant role in life satisfaction, level of media and social capital at levels of social support) demonstrate that sense of security among these social capital variables explains the greatest role played in the community by a sense of safety. |
